Working with Troubled Teens

5-week program - TBD

Troubled teens can benefit from a wide range of healthy, skill-building, and confidence-boosting activities with horses.

We can have both licensed therapy sessions and non-therapy sessions, both of which offer structure, connection, and positive personal growth.

Groundwork & Communication Activities

These help teens practice patience, emotional control, and non-verbal communication.

  • Leading a horse through simple patterns

  • Guiding a horse through obstacle courses

  • Learning how horses read body language

  • Building trust through calm, consistent cues

Why helpful: Horses respond honestly to emotions, so teens immediately see how their energy and actions affect others.

Relationship-Building & Bonding

Many teens open up more easily around animals.

  • Grooming sessions

  • Quiet time being near horses

  • Learning about herd behavior and trust

  • Connecting with one consistent horse over time

Why helpful: Horses offer calm, non-judgmental presence, which helps teens feel safe and grounded.

Horsemanship Skills

Structured responsibility builds confidence and routine.

  • Feeding and caring for horses

  • Cleaning stalls or organizing equipment

  • Learning safety and handling skills

  • Understanding horse behavior and needs

Why helpful: Responsibility + accomplishment = increased self-worth.

Mindfulness & Emotional Regulation Activities

  • Breathing exercises while brushing or standing with a horse

  • Noticing how the horse reacts to their emotions

  • Learning to calm their body so the horse calms too

Why helpful: Horses reflect tension, so teens learn self-regulation in a real, tangible way.

Leadership & Problem-Solving Challenges

  • Working with a horse to complete tasks

  • Teamwork exercises with peers

  • Setting goals and tracking progress

  • Overcoming obstacles as a partnership

Why helpful: Encourages resilience, determination, and constructive communication.

Creative or Reflective Activities with Horses
